Quote from Grey's Anatomy

November 16th 2006 21:21
Dr Meredith Grey
"You can have anything you want in life, as long as you're prepared to give up everything else for it."

Voiceover by Meredith.

Don't know which episode.

In essence, it's the idea of ten years to become an expert. With perhaps this irony: that the actress herself has taken ten years to reach her level of success.

The image of a curve that plateaus: anyone can climb to the plateau, and all you need is determination and time.

Adrian,

The idea seems a little simple to me and not without dispute. However, I guess someone will turn it into something meaningful?

You're a busy little beaver, in your own way, aren't you?

Hey Katy! Well, there's a great deal of optimism in it, granted. But to make the statement a little more plausible, I'd put it this way.

The scientific American article that the link points to stands for the proposition that practice counts more than, or is in fact constitutive of, talent. Genius is a myth.

If this is true, then skill mastery is time and effort. But, in turn, couldn't most things that people want, including money, be reduced to skill mastery?

Imagine spending 16 hours a day on a single thing, be it practising a musical instrument, or Orble...

As to your second para, no offence, but I have to ask -- what's the deal with all these comments? "You're a busy litle beaver, in your own way, aren't you"; "Keep it up; you're doing well"; "Ho hum"; "You've come a long way", etc...? Are they intended to be patronising?

Adrian,

They are intended to be playful, would you have preferred "you work hard across very many areas".

I especially liked the sculptures by the sea and I quite clearly said that, aren't you a little bit sensitive for one so knowledgeable, and I have acknowledged your broad knowledge elsewhere.

I guess I think that blogging is not such a serious activity in life, but none the less useful.

All I can say is look for the positive not the negative.

Unless you'd like me to simply say, aren't you wonderful, I love what you do, there can be no question as to the wisdom of everything you say, and let us take all these things very seriously.

Psychologists say we always perceive in others the faults which we have ourselves.

Beavers are nice little creatures, aren't they? And their industry is to be admired, isn't it? Good things come in small parcels don't they?

Unless you object to little but I have absolutely no knowledge of your height or weight and don't intend to divulge my own.

If you are looking for a contrary view you'll always get it from me, especially with respect to serious issues where one person's view, alone, should never be tolerated.

I often don't agree with you, but that does not infer there is no substance in what you say.

As regards coming a long way, you stated you didn't get the art initially and then caught onto the ideas very quickly. In the vernacular, you've come a long way baby, is in accordance with pop culture, and aren't blogs that,
at least I don't use foul language instead of an expressed opinion.

Always look on the bright side of life, is my philosophy.

I would have thought you would have appreciated my very quick responses to your new blogs, avoiding those which I have no desire to be involved with.

You have provided much insight into my computer art, leaving your comments which is very much appreciated, but I have never attempted to influence your views, just tried to encourage while giving your mind the free range it deserves.

Dear Katy,

Thanks for your reply! I do think that you should take the question as a question, and not read into it. That is, as a genuine inquiry as to whether your comments were patronising -- not as an assertion that they were. I didn't intend any offence by the question, and I hope that you didn't take any.

I think that the interpretation of "patronising" was reasonably open -- for instance, diminutives are frequently employed in put downs, and some of the nastiest insults masquerade as praise.

I respect your attitude to always look for the positive, but I don't adopt it -- I personally want to look for all possible interpretations, both positive and negative, and not pretend that one or the other isn't there.

So I don't think that recognizing patronising as possible makes me inappropriately quick to take offence. I think it just means that I'm awake to language. I'd also claim, for instance, that you too would contemplate the "patronising" interpretation had I written in your blog, "You're doing well with these. Keep it up!" or "You're a busy little beaver in your own way, aren't you?".

Of course I don't want you always to agree with me! Or even to think I have any knowledge about anything! And of course I appreciate your commentary on my posts (it's rather amazing to get any feedback at all). But I don't think these matters are in issue; I mean, I don't think I've complained about any of them. In fact, I can't remember your ever having disagreed with me, though I think you think you have.

I apologize if you feel that I'm trying to restrict your opinions. I believe in free action -- for instance, fucking in public -- so naturally I also believe that everyone should be free to speak their mind.
