Nature of consciousness
October 4th 2006 06:45
There's a short essay by Umberto Eco, two pages or so, about how jeans affect consciousness. He speaks of how academics are used to an "internal life", wandering around in a daze, thinking of politics, or geometry, or the nature of language. But when he dons a new pair of jeans, tighter than he's used to, his thinking switches to how his jeans feel, how he looks in his jeans, what judgments people will make about him based on how he looks, etc.
